Night Prayer

The following Night Prayer was used for SOULfeast 2015.

Suggestions for use: We invite you to use the following liturgy to read aloud with a group of people or quietly to yourself as you invite a peaceful night of rest to prepare you for tomorrow. Remember that you are held and protected by the God who loves you so very much.

A Note on Repetition: Our desert mothers and fathers believed that repeating the same prayers each day and night helped them connect with the Holy on a deeper level. When they weren’t trying to remember new words or learn new hymns, they were better able to practice prayer and meditation that led them to God’s truth and light. The liturgy does not change so you may connect with God and rest deeply in God’s love.

May God Almighty grant us a quiet night and peace at the last.

It is good to give thanks to you, O God.

     To sing praise to your name, O Most High;

To herald your love in the morning,

Your truth at the close of the day.

Evening Hymn:

Ubi Caritas (Live in Charity)

     Ubi Caritas et amor.

     Ubi Caritas deus ibi est.

Live in charity and steadfast love.

Live in charity; God will dwell with you.

Prayer of Confessions, Examination of Conscience, and Declaration of Pardon

     Let us pray.

Holy and gracious God, I confess that I have sinned against you this day.

Some of my sin I know—

the thoughts and words and deeds of which I am ashamed—

but some is known only to you.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I ask forgiveness.

Deliver and restore me, that I may rest in peace.

By the mercy of God we are united with Jesus Christ,

and in Christ we are forgiven.

     We rest now in peace

and rise in the morning to serve God.

Suggested Psalm Reading

     Psalm 4; 13; 31: 1-5; 91; 121; or 134

Psalm Prayer*

May the prayers of our ancestors

lead us to you, O God.

     May we hear your voice,

     trust your presence,

     and seek your truth forever.

     Sunday: Luke 11: 1-4

     Monday: Luke 11: 5-13

     Tuesday: Luke 10: 25-37

     Wednesday: Acts 2: 42-47

     Thursday: Luke 9: 23-26; 14: 25-33

You have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.

Hear my prayer, O God; listen to my cry.

Keep me as the apple of your eye.

Hide me in the shadow of your wings.

     In righteousness I shall see you;

When I awake, your presence will give me joy.

You are my rock and my stronghold.

Into your hands, O God, I commend my spirit.

Closing Songs:

Wait for the Lord

Wait for the Lord, whose day is near.

Wait for the Lord: keep watch, take heart!

Stay with Us

Stay with us, O Lord Jesus Christ, night will soon fall.

Then stay with us, O Lord Jesus Christ, light in our darkness.

Dismissal with Blessing

     Guide us waking, O God, and guard us sleeping;

that awake we may watch with Christ,

and asleep we may rest in peace.

     Let us bless the Lord.

     Thanks be to God.

The almighty and merciful God bless us and keep us.

Close with a moment of silence.
