All of us, as Christians, enter the Advent Season with an expectation of the promised Messiah.
On this day, World AIDS Day, I am reminded that all those with HIV/AIDS wait for comfort and a cure.
Today we pray for them, their families, and friends.
The Upper Room continues to provide comfort, prayer and support for those around the world infected and affected by AIDS by means of Prayers for Encouragement, a prayer booklet now available in 20 different languages including: Afrikaans, Arabic, Chichewa, English (USA, Philippines), French, German, Hindi, Ilokano, Kinyarwanda, Kiswahili, Korean, Myanmar/English, Portuguese, Sesotho, Setswana, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Xhosa, Zulu
During a 2006 trip to Maua Methodist Hospital in Kenya, Dr. Don Messer, former president of Iliff School of Theology (Colorado, USA), discovered outdated and battered copies of The Upper Room daily devotional guide in the waiting room of an HIV/AIDS clinic. In response to this experience, he was led by God to contact The Upper Room about publishing a special collection of meditations and prayers for persons suffering with HIV/AIDS and other diseases. “Although the pages were torn and the edges were rough, people had repeatedly read the devotional guides seeking biblical counsel and spiritual advice while waiting for test results, receiving counseling and seeking anti-retroviral drugs at the clinic.” Messer’s initiative following that trip to Kenya led to the publication of Prayers for Encouragement: Persons Living with HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis and Other Serious Diseases.
Prayers for Encouragement is an undated booklet of meditations and prayers, modeled on the format of The Upper Room daily devotional guide. It is written by persons living with or working alongside persons experiencing diseases. Funding for Prayers for Encouragement comes from Upper Room Ministries, the Center for the Church and Global AIDS, United Methodist Global AIDS Fund, and a number of individuals passionate about offering hope and encouragement to persons who often are considered outcasts and unlovable by family and society. The booklet is also sold, in the US, in packets of 20, which continues to help underwrite costs for development of new language editions.
