The Upper Room congratulates Elaine Heath on her appointment as dean of Duke Divinity School.
Dr. Heath is the author of the new Upper Room book God Unbound: Wisdom from Galatians for the Anxious Church, and she frequently serves on the faculty of The Academy for Spiritual Formation. Her teaching at Upper Room’s SOULfeast event in 2015 inspired and challenged all who attended, lay and clergy alike.
Johnny Sears, director of The Academy for Spiritual Formation, says about Heath, “In the midst of institutional anxiety about the fate of the church in Western society, Elaine Heath has been a consistent voice of clarity and vision. She looks beyond the apparent decline toward vibrant and fresh expressions of Christianity breathing life into the next incarnation of the body of Christ.” Through projects like the Missional Wisdom Foundation and other collaborative efforts, Heath has identified new ways of being the church, ever rooted in spiritual practice and missional engagement.
Heath’s selection as the new dean of Duke Divinity School is a bold commitment to the apostolic and prophetic traditions she embodies. We invite our Upper Room community to join us in prayer for the new dean and the Duke Divinity School faculty, students, and staff.
